University demonstrations in Valle Giulia. Rome, 1 March 1968
The university demonstrations in Valle Giulia on 1 March 968 represent a crucial moment in the history of the Italian student movement and in the evolution of the political and social context of the time. A symbolic event that marked the beginning of a period of student unrest and protests that would have a lasting impact on the entire Italian society.
On March 1, 1968, thousands of students gathered near the Faculty of Architecture in Valle Giulia, Rome, to protest against the government's decision to establish a new faculty of Political Science there. Students saw this move as an attempt to control and influence higher education, preventing the free expression of ideas.
The protest began peacefully but the situation quickly changed when the police began using force to disperse the crowd. There were violent clashes between the students and the police, with injuries on both sides. Images of injured students and police in riot gear became symbols of the student struggle.
Marcello Geppetti, among the photographers who were stationed at the University that day, was once again able to capture in one shot the essence of an event that marked the beginning of a series of student protests and revolts throughout the country.
