Fights at La Sapienza University between students and police. Rome, 16 March 1968
Between the end of the fifties and the beginning of the sixties, Rome hosts the greatest phenomenon of the twentieth century costume, the Dolce Vita. But the light of all those spotlights will eventually blind the Sixties. From 1962 onwards, in fact, the enthusiasm is extinguished and the tumults in the hearts of the youngest are ignited. The dances unleashed in the newborn Piper (1965) of Via Tagliamento will not suffice to placate them. He will arrive on March 1, 1968, with his clashes in Valle Giulia, to change the cards on the table and relegate to the background the lightness of the previous period.
This opens one of the darkest windows in the history of our country, the "Years of Lead". La Dolce Vita seems light years away and in the squares clashes, strikes and demonstrations alternate. A climax of violence that will culminate in March 9, 1978, the day of the kidnapping of Aldo Moro and the killing of his escort.
In the photograph, a man runs towards something or is fleeing. The photographer’s mastery lies in having stopped the moment when the feet do not touch the ground, suspended in an eternal, albeit motionless, movement.
